Meek Mill
There’s no doubting that Philadelphia is home to some of the world’s top rappers, but why has Meek Mill been so controversial? While growing up in North Philly, the bold, talented artist has been linked to the city for years. His latest album, “Wow,” is a powerful statement of his place in Philadelphia’s rap landscape. The rapper’s recent controversy has only served to strengthen the city’s rap community.
As he was awaiting trial, Meek Mill and his crew recorded a video from the side of a road in Jamaica. The rapper was afraid of the potential consequences back home but decided to record the video anyway and even got the cops to take a picture of him. The sellout crowd roared in joy. The video was a sensational sensation and has racked up over 4 million views on YouTube.
PNB Rock
Philadelphia has a long history of producing some of hip-hop’s most creative and inventive rappers. Although the city has been synonymous with the slick and innovative styles of its past, the current generation of local rappers is keeping the hip-hop scene fresh and honest. A non-Philly resident might ask, “Yo, who’s that?”
The newest member of Philadelphia’s hip-hop scene is Raheem Jarbo, born on September 3, 1977. His popularity has soared, with a devoted fan base and two hundred thousand monthly listeners on Spotify. Currently, he doesn’t have an official SoundCloud account. Nonetheless, his fans are raving about his music and his catchy tunes.
Lil Uzi Vert
Born Symere Bysil Woods, Philadelphia native Lil Uzi Vert started rapping in high school, where he was involved with the group Steaktown. Eventually, he dropped out of high school and was kicked out of his home, but he turned his life around and dedicated himself to music full-time. His fast-paced delivery and booming hooks have garnered huge fans, including Don Cannon and DJ Diamond Kuts from Power 99. In addition to being featured on Carnage’s “WDYW,” his mixtape Luv Is Rage gathered more attention.
Looking for hip-hop artists in Philadelphia, look no further than Lil Uzi Vert. He has a rich history of rapping, pioneered gangster rap, and established himself as one of the world’s leaders in the battle rap scene. The city’s hip-hop scene has produced some of the most recognizable names in the game, ranging from the 1980s’ Fresh Prince to the late 1990s’ Eve Siegel and Beanie Siegel to today’s State Property and Lil Uzi Vert.
Tierra Whack
While the Philadelphia rap scene is booming with new talent, it is important to recognize that Tierra Whack is a local phenom. Whack’s music is a blend of mumble rap pushed to cartoonish ends. Her production is edgy and witty, bringing listeners into her world while drawing them in with her lyrics.
While studying vocals at Benjamin Rush Arts Academy in Philadelphia, Tierra grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. At the time, she was one of the few African Americans in an almost entirely white high school class. This background has shaped her unique sound and style. Whether it is rapping about racial discrimination, bullying, or overcoming her disability, Tierra Mckenna is one of Philly’s top rappers.
Kur
Philadelphia rappers Kur and Mozzy are quickly rising up the hip hop scene in their hometown. Their intense lyrics and rapid flows pack their hardcore street tales with an honest approach. Known for his co-sign from fellow Philly native Meek Mill, Kur shot to fame in the early 2010s. After releasing several mixtapes, they made their big break with the release of How It Never Was in 2015.
Quilly is a staple in the streets of Philadelphia. His song “Letter to Haines Street” embodies community spirit. His live performances often include neighborhood block parties during the summer. He must make a killer single to break into the mainstream rap scene. If he doesn’t, his music will remain underground and unheard of. Then again, Quilly will probably be a big star in the city.
Sim Santana
Growing up in Philadelphia, Sim Santana honed his craft as a young rapper in a friend’s home studio. He sporadically dropped tracks on Soundcloud and occasionally dropped music videos, hoping to find success. His music video, “Flexin N’ Flashin,” has been viewed over five million times. As a result, Sim signed with Columbia Records in June 2019.
Viro the Virus is another Philadelphia rapper hailing from the neighboring city of Mt. Holly. His clever wordplay has earned him recognition, and he is considered one of the city’s most honest and raw M.C.s. After being featured on the Snowgoons’ critically acclaimed Black Snow album, Viro the Virus has achieved international recognition. However, his limited exposure has only boosted his popularity, and he remains a Philadelphia underground legend.

His father, who had an unstable mental state, committed suicide when Matt was two years old. His mother, Laurel, was already a public figure by the time Matt was two, and she gave birth to him. The young rapper began writing and performing poetry at a young age and was inspired by artists such as Eminem and Marilyn Manson.
Although Matt is only six feet tall, he believes he is mentally and emotionally older than his age. He encourages people not to underestimate his talent and wants to stay as grounded as possible. While attending college, Matt Ox is also helping his family with household chores and studying. Even though he has enemies, he does not care about them and has a great attitude. He is destined for bigger things.

Lil Rekk has currently signed to Highbridge The Label.
In addition to his music, Lil Rekk has been the subject of controversy. His diss tunes often evoke debate, which is why it’s so rare to see rap stars in jail. Still, Lil Rekk has stood his ground and spoken out against police segregation of African Americans. With “PTSD,” the rapper makes a point of expressing his opinions on social issues.
