Rolling Stone’s annual Hot List issue — in which the magazine details the newest trends and faces its readers need to know now — is on the stands. And right there, after spreads on everything from ranked choice voting to “hot pastor” and “Tik-Tok preacher” Brandon Robertson, are 10 pages devoted to the new wave of Houston hip-hop.
In addition to HVN, writer Jeff Ihaza and photographer Christian K. Lee introduce the wider world to Tisakorean, OMB Bloodbath, Reggie, Maxo Kream, Don Toliver, Ken the Man, Fat Tony, Peyton and BBY Kodie.
“Like the generation before them, the new crop of Houston musicians is a sign of what’s to come nationally,” Ihaza writes. “Already, artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo and Travis Scott illustrate the ways Houston has spread to the mainstream.”
Rolling Stone’s celebration of H-Town culture is one of three East Coast publications that have suddenly discovered Houston. Travel & Leisure magazine recently raved about the city’s visual art scene (specifically the new Kinder Building at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) and Time just declared Houston as one of its 100 world’s greatest places for 2021.
The Rolling Stone issue, with Billie Eilish on the cover, is on sale now.
