“Hvølja,” the chest-caving new single from Faroe Islands-based loss of life/doom practitioners HAMFERÐ is now streaming alongside an accompanying video. The punishing new hymn seems on the band’s Males Guðs Hond Er Sterk full-length, set for launch on March twenty second by means of Metallic Blade Data.
When this magisterial sextet’s third album Támsins likam emerged in 2018 – ten years after they first entered a rehearsal house – the extremely acclaimed and powerfully emotive opus thrust the mourning-suited band onto the world stage. Louder Sound topped the report, “a shocking triumph,” Heavy Music HQ concurred lauding a, “tour de drive for the band,” whereas 9 Circles noticed, “HAMFERÐ faucets right into a wealthy cultural vein to attract affect for his or her lyrical and musical themes, but the filtering of this by means of the lens of loss of life/doom makes for a novel strategy to folk-themed steel, and one that’s massively profitable in its utility.”
Six years on, the buildup of plentiful reside expertise and interpersonal chemistry has had a profound influence on HAMFERБs extraordinary fourth LP, Males Guðs Hond Er Sterk, feeding into the artisanal sonic imaginative and prescient of guitarist and producer, Theodor Kapnas.
Concertedly eschewing all of the quick-fix trickery of contemporary recording know-how, the band recorded the songs collectively reside within the studio, and not using a click-track. The result’s a resoundingly human album that heaves, swoops, and shifts in elemental type – from passages of glacial post-metallic magnificence by means of sorrowful folky goth cadences, through icy blackened blastbeats to shuddering vistas of utmost doom mastery – with a crackling tight-but-loose interaction recalling the giants of yesteryear.
Along with the old-school recording set-up, guitarist and producer Theodor Kapnas’ imaginative and prescient for the sound is greatest exemplified by penultimate music and newest single, “Hvølja” (Whaleskin), a sluggish sludge crawl with a superbly disgusting tone. “I had a giant fascination with making stuff rougher, dirtier and uglier,” affirms Kapnas. “Musically it’s all about pressure; suspended chords and tense harmonies, at all times having that feeling of uncertainty. That music is possibly my favourite monitor on the report, simply because it’s so uncompromising. All the pieces goes to 11.
“‘Hvølja’ can be the darkest and ugliest music we’ve written so far,” he continues. “It’s a sonic and lyrical illustration of the world being violently ripped aside by monstrous currents and consumed by a black sky above.”

The narrative idea behind Males Guðs Hond Er Sterk is impressed by the 1915 whaling catastrophe off the Faroe Island village of Sandvik (dwelling of HAMFERÐ keyboardist Esmar Joensen), when fourteen males died driving whales ashore within the stormy bay. The village inhabitants witnessed the tragedy from the seaside.
The unhappy story has enabled HAMFERÐ to powerfully convey to life the which means behind their Faroese title, zeroing in on the traumatic emotional drive behind this supernatural phenomenon. “If you see somebody in hamferð, you see their apparition,” Kapnas explains. “Principally it’s wives with husbands at sea, who’ve seen them dripping moist within the doorframe in the midst of the night time. Usually, in folklore it’s a warning that one thing dangerous will occur, and there are a number of documented episodes of this taking place in Sandvik in 1915. So it’s type of full circle for us.“
