As a zealous admirer of hip-hop and its culture, Kenny Lekgwareng of Nwamatatani village reflects ghetto hip-hop fashion in his artwork, which continues to draw more music enthusiasts.
Kenny, a self-taught artist, is impacting the hip-hop art world with the colourful pictures he paints on clothes and shoes. With his distinct style of pen and pencil paintings on clothes and shoes, his work continues to attract more hip-hop and streetwear fans.
“My customers adore my work, and I love drawing faces more than anything else as they show realism,” he said. He also hopes that he will soon get more recognition for his unique pieces. “I’m aiming to reach the level where I will send my artwork to art galleries nationally and internationally,” he said.
Known by his clothing brand K-Customs, Kenny’s love of art and the hip-hop genre prompted him to start making his own music too. Thus far, he has released one track named Phanda ma nigga, and he is also anticipating releasing his first EP in December.
He was inspired by American hip-hop artists such as Eminem and Joyner Lucas, whom he grew up listening to. According to him, witnessing hip-hop fashion in art is fascinating. Many individuals around his area were drawn to his work after witnessing an interpretation of hip-hop in a brush stroke or photograph.
“My art brand is becoming popular, and I appreciate my customers who always share my exceptional work on their social-media platforms. I also used to draw tattoos, but, unfortunately, my machines were destroyed when the house I used to live in burnt down,” he said.
He explained how he began his artistic adventure 13 years ago and how he honed his talent by watching YouTube videos. “I began experimenting with pencils and vivid colours in a drawing book while I was in Grade 2. As time went by, I then started watching YouTube videos to learn some skills and techniques,” he said.
