Bryant “Chef Baul” Williams, who served as a private chef to rappers like Lil Baby, 2 Chainz, and Kendrick Lamar as well as to filmmaker Tyler Perry, plans to open two new restaurants in downtown Atlanta this fall.
All-day breakfast spot Betty Sue’s and to-go restaurant Binky’s take over a former McDonalds and a sub shop beside Summit Cafeteria at the Five Points Plaza on Marietta Street. Williams calls the move to downtown Atlanta a “central location for all of my clients.”
Betty Sue’s
Serving breakfast and brunch all day, Williams named the restaurant for his grandmother. The menu centers on grits bowls topped with oxtails, lobster, and shrimp using his personal line of grits. Packages of Chef Baul’s Grits will also be available for purchase at Betty Sue’s. In addition to grits bowls, expect pancakes, waffles, egg dishes, and vegan options on the menu, along with beer and wine from the bar.
Williams plans to open Betty Sue’s by the end of the year and says the design for the restaurant features a “nice urban, Southern look.”
Binky’s
Paying homage to his father’s nickname, Binky’s will focus mostly on takeout, but should include at least four seats for those who wish to dine in after receiving their order. Open for lunch and dinner, the menu features entrees of salmon, lamb chops, grilled vegetables, mac and cheese, and fried chicken.
Williams hopes to open Binky’s by the end of September, but definitely prior to the opening of Betty Sue’s.
Williams describes his style of cooking as “southern soul” infused with the flavors of Japan, the Caribbean, and countries around Europe. In 2019, Williams opened soul food restaurant Chef’d Up at the Highland Walk Apartment complex on the corner of Highland Avenue and Sampson Street, a space previously home to Last Word, Cast Iron, and The Barrelhouse.
The restaurant closed a year later amid a rental dispute with Perennial Properties, the owner of Highland Walk Apartments. The space is now home to Highland Bistro.
